Bill and Sharon Cooper of Cooper Farms in South Bristol, N.Y. are the owners of the new bakery on Main Street in Shortsville.
Bill’s grandfather built a cabin on the land in South Bristol in 1826, and started a fruit and vegetable farm. A nursery was started on the farm in 1890. Today there are over 30 varieties of apples and 50 varieties of grapes. There are also 100-year-old Concord grape vines that are still producing grapes today.
Bill’s mother and grandmother started the baking business selling apple and grape pies on Route 21. Later Bill’s wife Sharon joined in the baking and eventually their daughter Candi. Candi’s first job 31 years ago was squeezing the grapes, which separated the pulp of the grape from the skin to make the grape pies.
The family decided it was time to find a store to sell their baked goods, and they opened in Shortsville the last week of October. The fruits, grapes and berries used in the baked goods are all from the Cooper farm. The farm is organic so no pesticides are used.
The bakery carries a wide variety of baked goods, cakes, pies, cookies, bagels, scones, cupcakes, cream puffs, éclairs, and several kinds of bread and many many more items. (I have heard raves about the cinnamon buns.) They do orders for wedding cakes and special items, and large orders are no problem.
The Sunshine bakery is a very friendly, family business operated by Candi Cooper, Chelsie Pitkin, (Chelsie studied at the pastry school in New York city) and Vicky Cooper. Stop in for a cup of coffee and a fantastic desert they will make you feel right at home.
